Is WAM on this year?

Hey, in case it wasn't implied by the above, I've kinda soured on the postcard thing, but I'm still interested in participating in the editathon, and this year I've got my "Japanese culture" TBAN suspended and so would probably do much better than last year. But it's now a third of the way through October and no word yet on whether WAM 2017 is even happening. Hijiri 88 (???) 23:37, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

@Hijiri88: Judging by this, sounds like it's happening. _dk (talk) 23:26, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
@Underbar dk: Umm... meta:Wikipedia Asian Month 2017#Communities and Organizers implies it's not happening on English Wikipedia unless I or someone else volunteers to become the local organizer within the next two or three weeks. Hijiri 88 (???) 00:15, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
@Hijiri88: It seems like a massive gaping hole to skip over enwiki since it's always the one with the most participation. And if I recall correctly, the global organizers themselves run the English Wikipedia version. Don't know if that's still going to be the case this year though. _dk (talk) 20:29, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
Hi, @Hijiri88: and @Underbar dk:, Yes, WAM is happening this year . Please sign-up here to start Wikipedia Asian Month 2017 in English Wikipedia. I will keep you guys updated about any other progress. Thanks --Sailesh Patnaik (Questions) 18:40, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

@Hijiri88: @Underbar dk: Apologies for the late reply, there's been a big re-shuffling of organizes (both locally and internationally) and we're try to get up to speed. But yes, the English Wikipedia is participating this year, and I've updated the main page to reflect this :) We look forward to your participation! Also, Hijiri88, I sent you an email regarding the postcard - I'll see what I can do! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 05:25, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for inviting me

Thanks team for having me here! Is there is list of articles that can be edited? I usually use the Women in Red page but it would be good to use a list. --Parul Thakur (talk) 13:16, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

"no copyright violations, questions of notability"

FWIW, I think these examples should be either cut or expanded. "no major issues" would be interpreted by diligent Wikipedians as meaning the articles need to comply with all our content policies and guidelines, but our listed examples give the strong implication that the only major issues are ones that could lead to an AFD.

It's too late for 2017, but I think WAM2018 should amend this.

There's a bug in the submission tool

I don't know if it's fixable (is it limited to four criteria?), but while the official WAM rules say that entries must be both 300+ words and 3,000+ bytes, the tool apparently allows submission of articles that meet either one of these criteria. The majority of properly referenced and well laid-out articles will hit 3,000 bytes well before they hit 300 words, so these are not the same thing. Hijiri 88 (???) 08:43, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Details meaning about Council Bill

I want to know what is the appeared meaning about Council Bill -- Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.87.113.137 (talk) 06:23, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Assuming you were reading an article on someone called Council Bill, it seems you saw an advertisement for the WAM editathon. These advertisements show up for various on-wiki events all the time. If you are annoyed by them ... well, everyone is, but Wikipedia doesn't make profit by selling advertisements to third parties, which is why it's got far fewer annoying pop-up ads than a lot of the websites linked to from its articles on entertainment topics. If you don't want to create articles from WAM you can just ignore them (and if you do want to participate you'll need to create an account). Hijiri 88 (???) 07:01, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Edit-a-thon in Shanghai

I'll be arranging (within the next couple of months) some talks as described at Meta on the gender gap page as well as at Wiki-project feminism. There's also a discussion open on my talk page. I'd like to:

  • hear from people who have run ediathons
  • see some photos if available
  • collect links to resources
  • Hear from Wikipedians based in mainland China, especially Shanghai

Thanks all! Please contact me freely with ideas or any related chat! Edaham (talk) 05:37, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Requested articles list?

Does anyone know where I can find a list of article pertaining to Asia that need to be created? I would love to help contribute. SamHolt6 (talk) 17:47, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

I agree, this would be very helpful. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:53, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Asian Art Month with Metropolitan Museum of Art has plenty of requested articles! And I'll be glad to help anyone looking for a specific area or type of article, or looking to find sources or images.--Pharos (talk) 22:33, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

Questions about joining WAM

Hello

I would like to participate in the Wikipedia Asian Month. I'm currently writing an English article about an anime (a type of Japanese shows) character and I plan on translating it into Arabic.

My questions are:

1) Does writing about an anime character count as a suitable article topic for Asian Month?

2) If I write this article then translate it into Arabic, does that count as 2 articles?

3) How do I submit my article? Do I just submit it here (https://tools.wmflabs.org/fountain/editathons/asian-month-2017-en/add)? Or do I have to join a community or something because I read that my community or my Wikipedia has to be registered or something and honestly I did not understand that?

Also, If you can direct me to a place I can get anime pictures that I can use on Wikipedia without getting my article deleted then that would be great.

Thanks a bunch. Langotaku (talk) 00:00, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Langotaku, Sorry for late reply, Yes, writing articles on Anime character is totally fine, yup creating articles in English and translating the same article in Arabic is considered as 2 articles, but you have to submit it in the WAM Arabic Wikipedia tool. Thanks --Sailesh Patnaik (Questions) 10:32, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

Frequent Vandalism!

Hey, seems like we need to protect (or something) the pages that are under WP:WAM project, a lot of vandalism edits have been made in past days. I thought it'd be worth to aware the community about it. Thanks! :) Simranpreet singh (talk) 19:04, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

@Simranpreet singh: Thanks for the concern! Looks like an admin protected it after your message. Next year we'll try to set up month-long protection from the get-go. Cheers, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 14:43, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

Asako Hirooka

I've expanded this article to 300 words, it should now be accepted but I can't figure out how to resubmit, or otherwise clear the "not accepted". Maybe this happens automatically and I'm just being impatient? Penny Richards (talk) 14:24, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

@Penny Richards: Noted - we'll make sure it gets re-judged. Thank you! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:55, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

3 days left for Met's Wikipedia Asian Art Month project!

If you'd like to start a new short article for Wikipedia Asian Art Month, you have 3 days left to join in the fun. I'll be glad to collaborate with you on whatever topic you like, and we'll send you a Met postcard lovingly signed by me. Expanding an article by a significant amount works as well.--Pharos (talk) 18:24, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

Redirect

For my submission, I expanded a redirect into Miyuki Aoyama (poet). But the WAM tool won't accept it as an original article. It tells me the article was created in 2009. Nine Zulu queens (talk) 18:25, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi @Nine Zulu queens: Thanks for letting us know. Please list that article over at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Asian Month/Submissions and we'll include it in our judging. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:50, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Start end/times

I feel bad that I didn't submit more articles on time. I got busy with a bunch of things in November.

I do think for next year, I would prefer a start time that is of the first occurrence of November in any time zone (When it's around midnight in the Pacific Ocean), and ends at 11:59 PM in the final time zone for November. This gives editors in San Francisco and Honolulu extra time to finish things up before the deadline (I was in Shenzhen, though...) WhisperToMe (talk) 18:02, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

@WhisperToMe: Good feedback for next year - we'll also forward to the international organizers as well. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:38, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
